A Night at al-Baqi'
In Sahih Muslim, 'A'ishah reports that the Prophet ﷺ would go out at the end of the night to al-Baqi', the graveyard of Madinah, greet its people and ask Allah to forgive them (Sahih Muslim 974). One such night is remembered through Abu Muwayhibah.
He reported that the Prophet ﷺ woke him in the middle of the night and told him that he had been commanded to ask forgiveness for the people of al-Baqi', and asked him to come along. Standing among the graves, the Prophet ﷺ greeted the dead and told them they should be glad of the state they were in, compared with what the living were about to face: trials coming like pieces of a dark night, one after another.
Then he turned to Abu Muwayhibah and told him that he had been offered the keys of the treasures of this world and a long stay in it, followed by Paradise, or else meeting his Lord and Paradise. Abu Muwayhibah begged him to take the first. The Prophet ﷺ answered that he had chosen meeting his Lord and Paradise. He prayed for the people of al-Baqi' and went home, and the report says that it was then that the illness in which he died began.
The Prophet ﷺ chose what is with Allah over everything this world could offer, and taught that the true measure of a life is how it ends.
If you were offered all that this world holds, or Allah and the Hereafter, what in your life now shows which you would choose?

What the hadith grades mean
- Sahih (authentic): an unbroken chain of trustworthy, precise narrators, free of hidden flaws or contradiction. It is acted upon.
- Hasan (good): like sahih, but a narrator's precision is slightly lighter. It is also accepted and acted upon. "Hasan sahih" means it reaches sahih by its routes.
- Da'if (weak): a break in the chain or a narrator who is not reliable enough. It is not used to establish beliefs or rulings.
- Very weak (munkar, matruk): a seriously flawed chain or a narrator accused of lying. It is not relied on at all.
- Mawdu' (fabricated): falsely attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. It may not be narrated as his words except to warn against it.
- The two Sahihs: every hadith with a full chain in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim is accepted as sahih by the scholars of hadith.
- Historical report: biographies and histories (Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabari) record events with chains that are often incomplete. They are used for the story, not for rulings.
- Hadith scholars grade a narration; the four madhhabs do not. Where a hadith carries a ruling, the page shows which schools act on it.
