Shuqran (Salih) رضي الله عنه
The Guard of the Captives
Shuqran went out to Badr while he was still a slave. The biographers say the Prophet ﷺ put him in charge of the captives taken from Quraysh, to keep watch over them after the battle.
Because he was a slave, he was not given a regular share of the spoils. Instead, the reports say, each man who held a captive gave him something for his work, so that what he received came to more than a fighter's share.
After Badr the Prophet ﷺ set him free. From then on he was a free man and a mawla of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a bond of loyalty that he kept for the rest of his life.
Faithful work in a humble post is not overlooked; trust given to the trustworthy is the beginning of honour.
