'Ali ibn Abi al-'As رضي الله عنه
A Short Life
'Ali did not live long. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr reports that he died in the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime, when he was close to coming of age. Another report, mentioned by later biographers, says he lived on and was killed at the Battle of Yarmuk; the scholars did not settle the question.
Either way, the Prophet ﷺ saw his daughters' sons die young: 'Abdullah, the son of Ruqayyah, and 'Ali, the son of Zaynab. Of Zaynab's children it was her daughter Umamah who lived on. All that the sources keep of 'Ali is his place on his grandfather's camel, and that is honour enough.
A life is not measured by its length. A child remembered for one day beside the Prophet ﷺ is remembered well.
If only one day of your life were remembered, which day would you want it to be?
